NSW Detective Sergeant John Breda knows how close he came to death.
The decorated child abuse squad investigator suffered catastrophic injuries on Australia Day this year, when he was stabbed in the Maroubra Junction Hotel, as he and two colleagues tried to arrest an alleged sex offender.
The medical case remains one of the most intense and complex to have passed before surgeons at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney’s east.
"It's a miracle that I'm still here," he told the Herald in his first public comments since the stabbing on January 26.
