SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP - The NSW veteran police officer who almost died after being stabbed while arresting an alleged child sex offender has been released from hospital.
John Breda, 45, was stabbed in the stomach and liver by Nick Newman, 33, in a beer garden at Maroubra Junction Hotel on Australia Day.
The highly respected detective will now begin rehabilitation after leaving St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney.
Det Breda's condition continues to improve daily but there is still a long road to recovery, police said on Wednesday.
The veteran police officer has been encouraged by the support he's received from colleagues and the public, police said.
Newman was shot and killed in the confrontation.
