NSW elite police to be armed with M4s

SYDNEY, Oct 11 AAP - Elite police officers from NSW's Public Order and Riot Squad are undergoing training to use high-powered M4 machine guns and will soon patrol the streets with them.
It's part of the NSW Police Force's plan to strengthen its response to terrorist violence by arming police outside of the Tactical Operations Unit with military assault rifles.
The first batch of elite officers have done their training and are accredited to use the M4 and now await the final sign-off from NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller, The Australian reports.
A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad are undergoing long-arm weapon training.
"An announcement on the rollout (of the weapons) will be made shortly," the spokeswoman told AAP said Wednesday.
