NSW officer saves couple from burning home

SYDNEY, Aug 30 AAP - An off-duty police officer has kicked down the door to a burning home in Sydney's inner west and saved an elderly couple while on his way to work.
The officer spotted the blaze in Sydenham at 5.45am on Wednesday and, with the help of two other good Samaritans, forced his way into the home to rescue the man and woman.
The couple, believed to be in their late 70s, was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation while the officer has been praised for his heroism, police said.
