4.03% salary increase, plus 0.5% superannuation increase
I am pleased to provide an update regarding your salary and salary related allowances.
The Police Association of NSW has successfully negotiated a further increase to your 2023 salary, delivering you a 4.03% increase to salary, plus 0.5% superannuation increase.
This brings the total increases during the current Award to:
• In 2023-24: a 4.5% pay rise, inclusive of 0.5% superannuation increase,
• In 2022-23: a 3% pay rise, inclusive of 0.5% superannuation increase,
• In 2021-22: a 2.5% pay rise, inclusive of 0.5% superannuation increase
In 2021, the PANSW achieved a three year Award to ensure police officers had the security of the maximum available salary increases guaranteed, despite the economic challenges at the time.
With that guarantee in place, the PANSW has each year since secured additional salary increases above the amount locked in, ensuring that members had the security of guaranteed pay rises while also achieving the maximum pay rises possible in the public sector.
How this additional pay rise was achieved
As members would be aware, you were due to receive an increase of 3.03% from the first full pay period after 1 July 2023 following successful negotiations in 2022, with an additional 0.5% payable into your superannuation by your employer also becoming payable from 1 July 2023. This brings the total employer superannuation guarantee contribution to 11% of salary.
This is a crucial increase adding valuable savings to your retirement.
On your behalf, we have been negotiating with the NSW Government, advocating for our members salaries to be topped up to what other public sector employees are receiving from 1 July 2023.
I am pleased to announce that police officers will be paid a further 1% top up from 1 July 2023 bringing the total to 4.03%. This is a significant addition; noting that we are currently within the term of our three year Award period, which is due to expire on 30 June 2024. This is the third additional increase the PANSW has secured with the NSW Government for members during a ‘no further claims award period’. This included the additional 0.49% in 2022, equating to an increase of 2.53% in salary and what was meant to be 3.03% for 1 July 2023, which has now been overridden by this third additional negotiated increase.
The existing Memorandum of Understanding remains unchanged
This percentage increase in salary will complement our current MOU which continues to lock in crucial entitlements and protections for our members. The value of these MOU items cannot be underestimated including:
• maintaining the Police Blue Ribbon Insurance Scheme (PBRI, D&D) benefits and entitlements including Income Protection up to age 65 at no additional cost to members;
• commitment from the NSW Government to reimburse additional costs where the concessional superannuation cap is breached due to Police Blue Ribbon Insurance (PBRI) arrangements (reimbursement of tax bills);
• retaining Workers Compensation exemption secured in 2012 providing superior workers compensation entitlements for police officers compared to other workers
During 2023, the PANSW will be actively involved in the review of the Industrial Relations system in NSW with the Government, we want to ensure police officers are able to secure fair and reasonable pay increases by removing the wages cap and enabling pay and conditions to reflect the hard work our members perform for the State of NSW.
Pay rise payment
The initial 3.03% pay increase was paid to you at the start of the financial year.
The further 1% (bringing total pay rise to the full 4.03%) pay increase was in your pay on 29 August 2023 and you will also receive back pay to 1 July.
